Background Information

Our local cemeteries, like many Australian burial grounds, reflect our diverse community with dedicated sections for different faiths alongside general areas. Council looks after a number of cemeteries, some still active and others with historical significance, located throughout our towns and villages.

We're currently developing Masterplans for Bowral, Berrima, and Bundanoon Cemeteries to help guide their future. You might notice that our cemeteries have grown organically over time, with a mix of monuments near the entrances and lawn areas and ash placements added as needed, sometimes resulting in a less structured layout.

We're also aware that Bowral Cemetery is nearing its capacity, and the need for burial space continues to increase.

These Masterplans will help us address these challenges and plan for the future of these important community spaces.

About the Masterplans

The Cemetery Masterplans for Bowral, Berrima, and Bundanoon cemeteries represent a sustainable approach to meeting the growing needs for burial and ash placement allotments.

These masterplans maximise the cemeteries' capacity by identifying undeveloped and infill areas that can accommodate approximately 1,100 new burial sites across the three locations.

These masterplans ensure the efficient use of space within Bowral, Berrima, and Bundanoon cemeteries.

They not only meet current and future needs for burial and ash placements, but also establish the cemeteries as accessible, sustainable spaces for remembrance and tranquillity

  • Sustainability

Mature trees are thoughtfully integrated into the design to offer shaded seating and memorial plaque options, while locally sourced natural materials are prioritised to ensure cost-efficiency, consistency, and character

  • Accessibility

Safe access for pedestrians and vehicles will be provided through designated parking areas to optimise capacity and reduce reliance on lawn and verge parking during ceremonies

  • Visual Amenity

The masterplans include wayfinding and informational signage, enhancing visitors' ability to navigate the cemeteries and access key details

Your feedback is a way for you to share your thoughts and ideas on a particular issue or project. The goal is to make sure your voice and the community’s voices are heard and considered. It helps provide valuable insights, identify potential issues and suggest improvements. This way, decisions can be more inclusive, transparent and effective, reflecting what you and the community really needs and wants.

Responses to engagement projects are compiled and considered. When projects are reported to Council to make a decision a summary of community feedback will be included. Updates on projects will be included in these pages and elsewhere on Council's website.

Sometimes it takes some months to provide feedback to the community and to make a decision as further investigation is often needed. We are listening and we do take your suggestions on board!
