Background Information

Cemeteries are essential community spaces that cater primarily for the memorialisation of community members. It is important to understand memorialisation within the meaning of interment right and the rules and expectations that are attached to interment rights in Wingecarribee cemeteries. This policy considers scenarios for different types of interment, the transfer of interment rights and maintains its limits on interment ownership and undertakings.

Several cemeteries contain threatened ecological communities that Council has a responsibility to care for and maintain. Sustainability remains Council’s focus of planning for our cemeteries; operationally, strategically and environmentally. This policy has been revised to ensure the planting of trees within cemeteries must consider site and environmental suitability as well as maintenance requirements to achieve sustainability.

This policy has been revised to be clearer and consistent in describing Council’s expectations and standards. Maintenance is a key factor in ensuring cemeteries meet community expectations as places of reflection and tranquillity both now and for future generations.

Viewing the Policy & Providing Feedback

The Draft Cemetery Policy was on public exhibition from Monday 26 May until Monday 23 June 2025. Associated documentation and the policy may still be viewed in the Document Library on this page.

Feedback was provided through one of the following ways:

  1. Submission Form on this page
  2. Emailed to mail@wsc.nsw.gov.au
  3. Hand delivered to Council's Civic Centre at 68 Elizabeth Street, Moss Vale NSW 2577
  4. Posted to Wingecarribee Shire Council, PO Box 141, Moss Vale NSW 2577

Only written submissions were considered and these were received by Council before Monday 23 June 2025. Please note that any submissions received may be included in the final report to Council.

Your feedback is a way for you to share your thoughts and ideas on a particular issue or project. The goal is to make sure your voice and the community’s voices are heard and considered. It helps provide valuable insights, identify potential issues and suggest improvements. This way, decisions can be more inclusive, transparent and effective, reflecting what you and the community really needs and wants.

Responses to engagement projects are compiled and considered. When projects are reported to Council to make a decision a summary of community feedback will be included. Updates on projects will be included in these pages and elsewhere on Council's website.

Sometimes it takes some months to provide feedback to the community and to make a decision as further investigation is often needed. We are listening and we do take your suggestions on board!
