Aboriginal Cultural Centre Lease Update - Your Say Wanted!

The Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council (ILALC) manages and leases the Aboriginal Cultural Centre in Mittagong. They're proposing changes to their lease agreement with Wingecarribee Shire Council.

Background

The Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council (ILALC) is a not-for-profit organisation that has a focus on the community's custodial responsibility for the protection and preservation of Country, cultural heritage, knowledge and traditions.

ILALC, hold a 99-year lease for their occupation of the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, 1A Rainbow Street, Mittagong. (Council resolution 13 November 2019).

What's the change?

The current lease requires ILALC to establish a local Aboriginal advisory group. However, this hasn't happened yet. ILALC is requesting an amendment to the lease so they can find the best way to involve the local Aboriginal community in running the centre.

Current:

The current clause 28 states: The Indigenous Advisory group shall consist of a maximum of 12 members with seven voting members and 5 non-voting members and that, as a minimum, the advisory group should consist of a minimum 7 voting members.

Proposed:

The proposed amended clause states: The Indigenous Advisory Group shall consist of a maximum of twelve (12) members with eight (8) members being Aboriginal with voting rights, and four (4) non-voting members appointed from the staff or officials of Wingecarribee Shire Council and the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council.
