It's Plastic Free July!

Did you know that Australians used 3.5 million tonnes of plastic in 2018 to 2019! And 84% of that plastic is sent straight to landfill, with only 13% recycled.

It's time to make a change and join people, communities and businesses all over the world refusing plastic products and reducing their waste. You can choose to refuse single-use plastics in July (and beyond). Being part of Plastic Free July will help you find great alternatives that can become new habits forever!

We would like to hear about what actions you already do, or may choose to take, to reduce your use of plastics that get used just once and then thrown away. These are known as “single use plastics”.

GET INVOLVED!

Use the Plastic Free Business Map to mark the location of a local business that is taking positive action to reduce the use of "single use plastic". To recognise businesses that support this initiative Council is developing an icon that can be displayed on the business premises and also in their online media.

Make a Plastic Free Pledge to reduce or avoid single use plastics. You can choose one of the suggested pledges or make your own. Post your actions using the hashtags #choosetorefuse and #MySouthernHighlands to inspire the community to reduce the use of single use plastics.

Answer the Let Us Know quick questions to help us understand what you’re doing to reduce the use of single use plastics.

Play a Trivia Quiz and test your knowledge of plastics.

Watch the Bag It movie to be inspired by a mans journey of discovery into plastics.

Stay informed by following this project (bottom right column) and sign up to the Plastic Free July Challenge (external page) to take action and reduce the use of single use plastics.
