Proposal to deconstruct part of the Robertson Community Centre building

Council owns numerous community facilities within the shire and undertakes a routine condition assessment of these facilities to ensure the structures are functional for the intended use and do not contain unnecessary risks. As part of our best practice asset management approach, when a facility is assessed in poor condition requiring renewal of significant works, a review of its usage and function is undertaken to ensure it is providing a value for money service for the community.

Council has undertaken a thorough condition assessment of the Robertson Community Centre and the adjoining preschool.

The community centre section was assessed as being in very poor condition. The building is declining due to its age, the poor condition of the roof and issues surrounding storm water management.

Council considered and investigated numerous options for the facility and due to the high cost of undertaking the necessary repair work, and the historical low use of the Community Centre portion of the building, it is recommended that the:

  • ramp access and Community Centre portion of the building be deconstructed,
  • roof and stormwater system be addressed for the remaining preschool side of the building, and
  • site of the Community Centre be cleared following demolition and made available for alternate community use.

The Robertson Community Centre closed in March 2020 due to COVID-19. Mould had been growing due to roof leaks and has increased since closure.

There were four regular hirers of the Robertson Community Centre prior to closure and all have been advised of these recommendations. Three of these groups have found alternate locations for their meetings due to the strong smell of mould and COVID-19 restrictions.

Other venues for hire in the Robertson area include the CTC Robertson, Robertson School of Arts, Anglican Church Hall and the Robertson Show Ground.

A preschool has leased part of the building since 2003. Council staff have been in contact with the current preschool to discuss the logistics of replacing the roof over the preschool part of the building.

Council is seeking feedback on the proposal to demolish part of the building and encourages suggestions for reuse of the land where the Community Centre portion of the building currently sits.
