Bushfire Management

As a member of the Wingecarribee Bushfire Management Committee and a local authority under the Rural Fires Act, Wingecarribee Shire Council is working closely with the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW to develop a strategic approach to fire management across the Wingecarribee Shire.

Of the 270,000 hectares covered by the Wingecarribee Bushfire Management Committee:

1% is managed by Council

33% is managed by National Parks and Wildlife Service

7% is managed by Forests NSW

3% is managed by Department of Lands

54% is in private ownership and

2% is managed by others.

Fire Mitigation Activities

Wingecarribee Shire Council has a high level of commitment to bushfire management.

Council implements measures to mitigate the impact of bushfire on the community and offers significant support to the emergency services during emergency events.

Fire mitigation activities performed by Council include:

  • Implementation of Councils Bushfire Management Plans for Mt Gibraltar, Gibbergunyah, Mt Alexandra and other Small Reserves.
  • Inspecting bushfire hazard complaints relating to Council managed land with the Rural Fire Service and installation of and maintenance of Asset Protection Zones.
  • An ongoing program of fuel reduction works on Council managed land to provide greater protection for vulnerable residences.
  • Pre and Post hazard Reduction Weed Control.
  • Track and Firetrail maintenance.
  • Community education.
