Background Information

The David Wood Playspace Project is currently under construction, an inclusive playspace delivered with funding provided by Council, NSW Governments Stronger Country Community Fund grant, the Retford Park Planning Agreement and funding from local community group The 4K.

Naming the new Playspace

The naming of the new playspace as "Murraural Playspace" was formally adopted by Council at the Wednesday 16 April Ordinary Meeting of Council. The contributions of The 4K, Wingecarribee Shire Council and Department of Regional NSW will be acknowledged on a plaque or similar at the entrance to the new playspace adjacent to the David Woods Playing Fields.

The name reflects community feedback and honours the local Aboriginal creation story of Gurangatch and Mirrigan, which centres on the Murraural waterhole at the confluence of the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee Rivers.

This story has directly shaped the playspace's design and features. Further details are available in the Gurangatch and Mirragan Jenolan Caves article and the engagement reports in the document library on this page.

  • How do I say "Murraural", the new proposed name?

    Murraural is pronounced Murra-wall

  • What does the name mean?

In the story of Gurangatch and Mirragan, the waterhole and the country surrounding the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee rivers are called Murrawall, in Gundungurra.

  • When will the new playspace be open?

We anticipate the new playspace to be open in late May 2025 (weather pending)
