Welby Landfill - Community Drop-In Sessions

Wingecarribee Shire Council is planning to rehabilitate and permanently close the Welby Landfill located at 40 Colo Street, Welby. We’ve prepared a Development Application (DA) to be submitted soon for the closure and rehabilitation of the site.

Before we submit the DA, we want to hear from you. We encourage you to review the proposal and provide any feedback you may have. There will also be opportunities to comment during the formal Public Exhibition stage of the DA process.

Why are we closing Welby Landfill?

Closing the landfill is necessary to surrender the operational license to the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) and allow for future limited community use of the site.

What will this involve?

  • Removal of some stockpiled waste.
  • Reshaping steep areas to prevent landslides and flat areas to prevent water pooling.
  • Building new and improving existing stormwater management structures to enhance water quality and site stability.

Future plans for the site

There are tentative plans to expand and improve the existing mountain bike facility around the site. However, this change of land use is a separate project requiring its own planning and approval process.

As the Crown Land Manager, Wingecarribee Shire Council will prepare a Draft Plan of Management for the site after the closure works begin. This plan will be exhibited and adopted following the Crown Land Management Act 2016 and Local Government Act 1993. The Plan of Management will determine the appropriate and desired future uses of the site.
